Day 20: Part 2

Top: Banana Republic Factory Store (coral/pink)
Shorts: MK Michael Kors, purchased from TJ Maxx (hunter green)
Cardi: purchased from Consignment C.A.T. (animal print)
Flip Flops: Antonio Melani, purchased from Dillard's Outlet
Wedges: purchased from Ross (brown leather)
Earrings: purchased from Dandy Lion Boutique (gold elephants)
Bauble Necklace: purchased from Etsy (teal)
Chain Necklace: Boutique purchase
Mustard Yellow Necklace: purchased from Simple Addiction
Belt: purchased from Goodwill (brown braided leather)
Watch: Betsey Johnson, purchased from Belk (animal print)

Whew!  That's a lot of stuff!!!

I had too much fun with today's outfit!  A friend told me on FB that I needed bolder accessories, so I went bold.  This is such a versatile outfit and fun color combination to work with.  Take a look at the different ways I styled a basic coral tank and hunter green shorts.

Just a reminder, this is what I originally had on today:

It's nice and simple, but could use some spicing up.

I started by adding a bolder necklace (or two).

- Teal bauble necklace

   Mustard yellow necklace -
Next, I added an animal print 'cardigan'.  I say, 'cardigan', because this was actually a sweater that I cut straight down the center in order to make it a cardigan.  I know, I'm a genius:).  I tucked in the top and added a brown braided leather belt.  I traded in the flip flops for these amazing wedges.  And, of course, the different necklaces; teal and mustard yellow.  Very versatile!!!

Here is a closer look at today's outfit:

Well, two post in one day!  I am wiped out.  Thank for the comments on here and on FB!  This is going to be very tough, not being able to shop for a whole year, but with your support, I can do it!  Your suggestions and comments are very helpful and give me that little push to continue on this journey.  Thanks again!

Happy Shopping,

Day 20: I Feel Like I'm On Safari!

Top: Banana Republic Factory Store (coral/pink)
Shorts: MK Michael Kors, purchased from TJ Maxx (hunter green)
Shoes: Antonio Melani, purchased from Dillard's Outlet (leopard print)
Watch: Betsey Johnson, purchased from Belk's (cheetah print)
Necklace: Boutique purchase

I totally feel like I am dressed for a fashion safari:)  I get a lot of my inspiration from Pinterest and the other day I saw this really cute hunter green, coral combo.  I thought, "I can do that!'.  So I did.

I just bought this cute tank right before my no shopping challenge started.  I almost didn't get it, but I am so glad that I did.  It is super comfy and will go with a lot of items in my closet.

I LOVE this watch!!!  My super awesome husband bought it for me for no reason other than that he loves me.  Those are the best kind of gifts to get!

I'm really digging the coral and hunter green combo.  What do you think?  What are your current favorite color combos???  Leave a comment below or on the FB page.

Day 19: Keep It or Toss It???

Dress: Goodwill (blue and white stripes)
Shoes: GAP Outlet (yellow)
Jewlery: Dandy Lion Boutique

I need your honest opinion today!  Should I keep this dress or toss it out?  I bought this 'dress' at Goodwill last summer.  It is actually a house gown.  I thought if I added a belt, I could make my very own shirt dress.  Plus, I like the nautical flair.  So, what do you think?

 Thoughts?

 A closer look.

I had Thomas snap one more picture before we headed out.  Isn't Arianna adorable?

Okay, now it's time to tell me the truth.  Maybe I'm being over critical of myself?  Maybe I'm right on in thinking this outfit isn't doing me any favors in the style department.  I just can't decide, so that is why I need your help.  Comment below or on the FB page.  Thanks in advance!

Day 18: Another Wal-Mart Find

Dress: Wal-Mart
Blue Cardigan: Maurices
Pink Cardigan: Gap Outlet
Belt: Dandy Lion Boutique
Earrings: Purchased in Hawaii
Bracelet: Purchased in Hawaii
Shoes: Merona, purchased at Target

If you'd told me five years ago that I'd have several dresses, and a few tops, from Wal-Mart, hanging in my closet I would have laughed in our face.  I was once a very proud shopper.  Proud, meaning that I wouldn't be caught dead in a Goodwill or shopping the racks at Wal-Mart.  My idea of slumming it was shopping at TJ Maxx.  I was a brat!

Fast forward a few years and now I can't imagine paying retail price for anything.  I LOVE Goodwill and TJ Maxx is my go to store for clothes, shoes and household items.  Wal-Mart and I still have a love/hate relationship with clothes however.  For me, Wal-Mart is VERY hit or miss!  I buy items from Wal-Mart if I want something trendy and cheap.  I don't expect my items from Wal-Mart to last for years, the quality just isn't there.  The dress I wore today is a great example.  I've worn it maybe 4 or 5 times since I purchased it last summer and it already has a rip up the seam in the back.  It is an easy fix with a sewing machine, but my sewing machine currently has another sewing project stuck in it and that is a whole other story.    Now let's get to todays outfit!

Not only is it a maxi dress, but it is also chevron and aztec patterned !  Super duper trendy right now!  The dress cinches at the waist so naturally I added a belt.  I love this stretch belt because the closure is two brushed brass little birdies that are kissing.  So sweet!  This was the perfect outfit for taking the kids to the neighborhood park today.

But I didn't end there.  I wanted to show you all a few more ways to wear (style) this dress.

I added a blue/green (not sure what this color is exactly;) cardi for a more dressed up look.  The cardi has beautiful ribbon detail on the collar.  This cardi was purchased from Maurices.

Please excuse my fly away hair!

I then added even more color by switching the blue/green cardi for a hot pink cardi that I purchased from GAP Outlet (my favorite store ever!).  Both of these outfits would be perfect for church or date night!

Finally, I stripped off the belt, earrings and bracelet (I have found that wearing jewelry and belts makes me very hot after a while).  Very, very casual but still cute.  On a side note, isn't Thomas doing a great job taking pictures for me?

Here is a closer look at the accessories I wore today.  The belt is brassy and black, the earrings are black shells, the bracelet is green and my shoes were a turquoise-y mint color.  Again, nothing is matchy matchy, but it all coordinates.

Now next time you are at Wal-Mart take a look through the clothing racks.  You may be pleasantly surprised at what you find!

Day 17: It's Too Hot To Be Wearing This!

Top: JCPenney (chambray)
Skirt: Old Navy (black and white chevron)
Shoes: TJ Maxx, Kenneth Cole Reaction (black with bead work)

I'm still on my chambray kick today plus, I didn't feel like shaving my legs so my only options were jeans (it's just too hot for jeans) or a long dress or skirt.  I decided to wear my lovely black and white chevron maxi that I purchased last year from Old Navy.  I thought it would be fun to wear my chambray button up, with my maxi, just so I could show the versatility of a chambray button up once again.  If you remember, only two days ago we were discussing the many ways to wear chambray.  If you need a refresher click here.

To get this look find a maxi skirt or dress that (heck, a shorter skirt or dress will work too!).  Add a chambray top  (why can't it just be called denim???), button half-way down, take ends and tie together, roll the shirt under all the way around, and you are done!  Easy peasy!!!

*Wear a tank top under the button up if you want.

This combo is very comfortable and stylish!  Chambray tops can be found in almost any store and in a wide variety of styles.  Pick what fits your personality best and go for it.  If chambray just isn't your thing then ignore everything I've just said;).  Below are some links to online stores that are currently selling chambray tops.  Click on the store name and enjoy!

Day 16: A Trip to The Community Pool

Dress/cover-up: Wal-Mart (green and orange)
Sandals: Target (gold)

I am not one to normally shop at Wal-Mart.  Not that I have anything against their clothes, but I generally just hate Wal-Mart.  However, two summers ago I was grocery shopping and happened to spot this dress hanging on a rack.  It has a chevron-ish Aztec-y print and bright, bold colors.  I was trying hard to add some spice to my mostly black closet, so I bought the dress.  It ended up being a little too short for me so I decided that it worked better as a swimsuit cover-up and that's why I wore it today.  It was perfect for walking to the neighborhood center pool with the kiddos.

Question:  Do you shop at Wal-Mart?  Why or why not???  Let me know!

Day 15: Chambray All The Way!

Dress: New York and Company (Chambray)
Shoes: Mia, purchased from Dillard's (brown leather)
Ring: Charming Charlie
Belt: Maurice's (brown stretch)
Earrings: Banana Republic Factory Store (gold)

What in the world is chambray anyway?

cham·bray

Noun
A linen-finished gingham cloth with a white weft and a colored warp, producing a mottled appearance.

Let me start off by saying that I've had this dress for a few years.  I bought it well before chambray was such a big deal.  Maybe I'm just ahead of my time:)  I just don't know.  What I do know is that this dress is one of the most comfortable things I have in my closet.  The fabric is super soft and the dress is very loose, hence the belt, oh and this dress has POCKETS!!!  Who doesn't love a dress with pockets???

Today, my friend Michelle and I decided to dress alike for church.  I wanted to show a couple of ways you can chambray.  I am wearing a dress and Michelle has on the, ever so popular , chambray button down shirt.  She layered her top with a bright colored tank and matching accessories.  She looked super adorable today!!!  She is also wearing super trendy white ankle pants.  Way to go Michelle, you look fabulous!

Chambray is very hot right now and a great addition to any wardrobe!  Chambray is classic and will always be in style.  You can wear  a chambray dress, like the one I have on, with heels, flat sandals, ballet flats, boots, wedges, really any kind of shoe!  I wear this dress in the winter time with a cardigan and boots and it looks adorable.  A chambray button down top can be worn with any color pants or shorts.  It can be worn with a dressy skirt, pencil skirt, maxi skirt (just tuck it in!).  If you need more ideas on how to wear chambray, just look at Pinterest.  There are TONS of ideas on how you can wear chambray anyway everyday.  I'm having too much fun rhyming today:)

Day 14: A Day At The Pool

Swimsuit: Dillard's (black and white polka dots)

Okay, so today's look isn't exactly fashion, but this is what I wore today so it has to go on the blog.  I can't believe I am putting a picture out on the internet of myself in a swimsuit, but here goes:

It just so happens that my BGF (Best German Friend) Tina and I were out shopping at Dillard's one day together.  We both found this swimsuit on the seasonal clearance rack and we both just had to have it.   We have both had kids and this suits hides what needs to be hidden and accentuates what God gave us:).  We didn't plan to wear matching suits today, but we both knew that the other would wear the suit.  We just didn't care!  That's how you know you're good friends.  When you have all the same clothes and you just flat out don't care if you're dressed alike!!!  Can you imagine if guys were like this?!?!?!

Don't forget to shop the seasonal clearance racks whenever you can.  I have noticed that many stores will take all their clearance items from one year, save it, and put it out on the full price rack the very next season.  Just doesn't seem right to me!  Keep an eye out for that!  Time to go ash this color out of my hair!

Day 13: 3rd Grade Awards Day

Top: TJ Maxx (navy blue with silver bead work)
Skirt: TJ Maxx (black
Sandals: Old Navy (black)
Watch: Fossil
Bracelet: purchased from a boutique
Earrings: Banana Republic Factory Store

Today my oldest son Thomas finished 3rd grade!  I can't believe he is getting so big so fast!  I also can't believe how smart he is.  He made all A's this year.  In fact, the kid has never made a B on his report card.  I am one super proud Mom!!!

I wanted to look nice, but stay comfortable for todays awards ceremony at his school.  Plus I didn't want to shave my legs, so I knew a maxi dress or skirt would be the item of choice today:)

A Clone Trooper decided to get in the picture with me:)

This wasn't necessarily my favorite outfit. That may be a good thing too, because I ended up with a bleach stain on the bottom of the shirt at some point today and a little bleach spot on the skirt.  I think next time, I'll wear the top with black or white shorts.

That is what is fun about fashion.  You have to play around with it, see what works.  This isn't a bad looking outfit, but I didn't feel great in it.  You should always leave your house feeling great.  If that is a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, then so be it.  Find what makes you feel the best and go with it!

However, I love my maxi skirt so instead of letting a tiny bleach spot ruin it for me, I'm just going to color in the spot with a black Sharpie.  I've done this before and it works rather well!  If I can find my navy blue Sharpie, I'll do the same thing to the shirt!  It is all about being creative!

Christin

Day 12: Teacher Ready Again

Top: TJ Maxx (mustard and white)
Skirt: Merona, purchased from The Fort Rucker Thrift Shop (black)
Shoes: Gianni Bini, purchased at Dillards (black)
Bracelet: Charming Charlie (black and gold)

The top is very blousy!  I thought that tucking it in would keep it from ballooning out everywhere, but it clearly did not.  Oh well!

I paired my yellow top with a black tulip skirt (another Fort Rucker Thrift Shop find!!!).  I wanted to keep the look delicate, so I wore my Gianni Bini peep toe pumps.  They are accented with a little bow on the top and give off a very girlie vibe, which I love!  I am also wearing my black and gold  Charming Charlie stretch bracelet.

This last picture is just for fun.  Since my husband is moving to Colorado on Saturday, we are having to enlist our 9 year old son to take over picture taking duties until we are reunited in a few months.  I think he did a pretty awesome job!

P.S. - Please don't mind my awfully white legs.  I just can't tan.  I am patiently waiting for all my freckles to connect.  Until then, I'll just have to accept being ghostly white.

Day 11

Top:  Loft Outlet (coral and white chevron)
Shorts: Gap Outlet (mint)
Shoes: Merona at Target (minty turquoise)
Bracelet: Wal-Mart (multi-colored beads)

I love everything coral and mint and I love when the colors are combined into a look.  This outfit was  perfect for running around town in 90 degree weather!  I almost didn't buy these shorts because I honestly didn't think I'd wear them that often.  I am so glad I had a change of heart!  You'll see me wearing these shorts A LOT this summer!  I'm going to show you how you can take something bold and colorful, like these shorts, and make them a classic staple in your closet.  Stay tuned!

Happy Shopping,

Day 10: Teacher Ready

Day 10:

Cardi - Gap Outlet (bright pink)
Blouse - TJ Maxx (navy blue w/bow)
Capris - Gap Outlet (navy blue and white stripe)
Shoes - Target (mustard)
Belt - Came with a dress I bought (black)
Watch - Fossil (silver)
Earrings - Banana Republic Outlet (silver)

Apparently my shadow wanted to make an appearance in this picture:).  You can't tell, but the blouse is navy blue and has an adorable bow on the top.  I taught classes all day and this was the perfect outfit for running around the office making copies and standing up to teach.  It is a very casual look, but still very office appropriate!

Day 7, 8 and 9: Playing Catch Up!

I have been without internet since Friday night, so I apologize for skipping out this weekend.  I do have outfits for you though:).  I was super busy all day Saturday moving.  By the end of the day we had most of the house unpacked and we were exhausted!!!  I have a set of super comfy blue and white polka dot pajamas that I LOVE!  It is a bit much having polka dots head to toe, but I don't care!  So, once all our friends left for the day, I put on my pj's and relaxed on the couch with my family.  These pj's were another Dillard's outlet purchase.

And with that I round out my one week of wearing polka dots.  I hope I have inspired you to add polka dots to your wardrobe.

Day 8: I honestly wore these same pajamas all day while unpacking.  Nothing new to show for Sunday, sorry!

Day 9 was a lot more fun.  I had to go into the AFTB office to prep for a class I am teaching tomorrow, so I was able to dress up a bit.  It felt good to be out of those pajamas:).  I traded in my polka dots for stripes.

I love this blue and white stripped dress from Maurices!  I think it looks very nautical.  I accessorized with a mustard yellow belt, red enamel heart shaped earrings and a white metal bracelet.  I am not one to wear matchy matchy accessories!  Accessories DO NOT have to match, they need to COORDINATE!  Okay, lesson over.

The good thing about having to wear every article of clothing in my closet within this one year challenge is that I am starting to know which items I need to get rid of ASAP!  Today's outfit, although adorably cute, was hard on my feet.  I bought these espadrille lace up shoes from Goodwill and I have never worn them before today.  They are Steve Madden, a brand I usually love and find very comfortable.  Not the case with these shoes.  My feet felt like they were on fire all day.  They will definitely be part of the clothing swap I am hoping to plan at some point this year.

Well that's it for today.
Happy Shopping,
Christin

Day 6: Polka Dot Cardi and A Puppy

Today I am wearing a black with gold polka dot Banana Republic cardi that I purchased from Goodwill.  I wanted to bring out the subtle polka dots by pairing the cardi with a bright yellow top that I puchased at a Gap Outlet.  I couldh've dressed this up by wearing black pants, dark wash jean trousers or a pencil skirt, but I decided to dress it down by wearing my favorite (and very comfortable) Gap Outlet boyfriend jeans.  On the foot end, I am wearing Gap Outlet yellow flip-flops.

Can you tell by now that I LOVE THE GAP OUTLET!?!?!?!  Well, I do.  Their prices are great and they have great basics!  My second favorite outlet is Banana Republic.  Next time you are close to an outlet center check out both of these amazing stores!

Isn't my pup Rosie looking spiffy today?  We just picked her up from the groomer.

Well, that is it for day 6.  Only 359 more days to go:)

Happy Shopping,

Day 5: Polka Dots at the Nail Salon

I wanted to share with you all that I have insomnia.  For the last few nights my insomnia has been VERY bad!  My husband asked me what in my routine had changed and I realized that I haven't been able to sleep since I started the blog.  I am so excited about the blog that I spend hours laying in bed thinking of new outfit ideas.  Crazy right?!  Anyways, while laying in bed (not sleeping) two nights ago, I remembered that I recently purchased this adorable sheer mint and corla polka dot top.  It's sad when you have so many clothes that you forget what is in your closet!  I'm loving the mint and coral color trend.  It screams Summer to me!

I know I said that I said I'm not a fan of the neon trend, but I couldn't pass up these neon yellow shorts from the Gap outlet!  They aren't an 'in your face neon', but neon nonetheless.  I wanted to pair my mint and coral top, from Ross, with yellow in order to show you all that your clothes don't have to be matchy matchy.  It is all about COORDINATION!  If I had coral shorts, I wouldh've worn them, but I don't.  So, I make due with what I have and I have yellow:)  White shorts would also look great with this top too.  I decided to wear my brown wedges (another Ross purchase) to round the outfit out.

And yes, I am posing for today's picture at my favorite nail salon.  I happened to run into a friend of mine, who was enjoying a pedicure and she offered to take my picture (thanks Amanda!).

My manicurionst, Jackie, asked if she could 'dot' up my nails, umm, yes, of course!  Like I would ever say, 'No', to polka dotted anything.  Jackie added a subtel light blue polka dot design to my ring fingure.  I love it!!!  Thank you Jackie and thank you Jennifer's Nail Care for always making me feel pretty and pampered!  Check out Jennifer's Nail Care here

Last, but not least, I am wearing my favorite octopus stretch bracelet.  It was a gift from my fabulous L.A. friend Zanne.  Thank you Zanne!!!

That's it for today!  Thanks for reading!!!

Office Ready Polka Dots and A Thrift Store Magical Find!

I do a lot of volunteer work for different Army organizations.  The one I've been with the longest is AFTB (Army Family Team Building).  I have been the AFTB Volunteer Program Manager for over 4 years now.  For the most part I go in at least one day a week to work.  Today I went in because a) I had to prep for an upcoming class, b) I had to get out of the house and c) I needed to wear a business appropriate polka dot outfit for the blog :)!!!  While I didn't snap a picture of myself doing any actual work, I was able to get my darling husband to take a picture of me after we arrived home.

I was very happy with how today's outfit came together.  I hadn't worn these pieces as an outfit before, but isn't that the purpose of this challenge?  To create new outfit combos with clothes I already have?!?!

Yes it is and I succeeded!  So many times I put together an outfit in my head and when I actually try on all the pieces together I look totally ridiculous.  The red and white (I am just as surprised with you that there isn't a trace of pink in this outfit!) polka dot top was given to me by a friend.  The white trousers were purchased at a Banana Republic outlet store.  I think I spent $40 on them and they are worth every penny!  They are super comfortable and the perfect length for me (I finally realized I am in fact petite and therefore must purchase petite clothes).

Now we take a closer look at what I am wearing...

I added a touch of red and whimsy by wearing my favorite red enamel heart earrings that I purchased at The Dandy Lion Boutique, which you can shop online by clicking here.  I decided to accessorize with a black belt and shoes, but I could've (and would've) accessorized with mustard yellow, cobalt blue, emerald green or even light pink.  I'm pretty sure the belt came with a dress I bought so I can't really give you a price on that.  I can tell you that it is patent pleather.  The white bangle bracelet is another purchase from The Dandy Lion and the Fossil watch was a Christmas gift from my husband.

The shoes are my favorite part of this outfit.  I bought these Ferragamo black patent leather pumps a couple of months ago, from the Fort Rucker Thrift Shop for $3.25!  Now, if you don't know Ferragamo, go online here and check out the prices of their shoes.  For a basic pair, like these, you'll spend around $300.  I was shocked when I found these bad boys for nothing!

So, what do you think?  Do I look office ready?  I consider the Ferragamo pumps one of my best finds while thrift shopping.  What has been your best find?  Let me know in the comments section below.

Happy Shopping,

3,2,1!!!

Well it is day 3 (hence the 3 in the title)!  I am still totally pumped and not yet going through shopping withdrawal.   I'm sure it will happen,  All addicts have withdrawal when they quit an addiction, but so far, so good.

I am totally stocked about today's post because I have 2 outfits to share with you all and I will reveal  the winner of the $25 ModCloth gift certificate!!!

Okay, so outfit number 1 has a fun story behind it.  Today at PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel)  the board members were asked to dress according to the decade in which we were born.  I was born in 1981 so I had to come up with an early 80's looking outfit.  I had the perfect item already in my closet.

When I went to visit my Grandma last summer in Texas, I remembered a housecoat I had seen before hanging on the back of her bathroom door.  When I went to visit her I asked her if she still had that housecoat.  She told me she did and I asked her if I could have it.  She asked my why I wanted it and I told her that I wanted to wear it as a dress.  She didn't understand why on earth I'd want an old lady housecoat, but I told her that once I added a belt to the dress it would look totally adorable.  Well, she wasn't using the old housecoat anymore so she gave it to me.  That was last year and since then I haven't had the opportunity or courage to wear the housecoat/dress in public.  Enter PWOC decade day.

The coat dress is black with pinkish coral flowers and brown leaves.  It has a high collar neck with a key hole in the front.  I paired the dress with a brown leather braided belt that I bought from Goodwill and brown platform wedges I recently purchased from Ross for $16.99.  I can't believe I received so many compliments on this outfit!  I LOVED telling everyone at PWOC that the dress was my Grandma's old housecoat.  It was priceless!

The second outfit for today keeps in with the polka dot theme for the week although, I am seriously thinking that the theme should've been polka dots and pink.

I didn't want anyone to think that in order to wear polka dots you have to wear a shirt, sweater, skirt, etc.  You can add subtle hints of polka dots in as your accessories.  Try wearing a polka dot scarf, belt,  shoes, a headband, a purse, jewelry.  There are really so many options!

I decided to wear  a polka dot scarf I bought several months ago from Wal-Mart as a belt.  Wearing scarves as belts is something I've done for years!  Scarves are cheap (depending where you buy them) and add a fun touch to an outfit as a belt, head scarf or worn around the neck.  I paired the scarf with a sheer hot pink blouse I purchased on clearance from ModCloth.com and a pair of black shorts with white piping detail that I recently purchased from a Banana Republic outlet.

Okay, now the really fun part.  Time to reveal the winner of the $25 ModCloth.com gift certificate (I wish I had a drumroll!).  And the winner is....... Erin Fackler!!!  Erin commented on Facebook.  Thank you so much for following the blog Erin!  I will email you your gift certificate right away!

There is still a $25 TJ Maxx gift card giveaway happening once the blog reaches 50 followers.  So, if you still haven't signed up to follow the blog, please do so and tell your friends!

As always, Happy Shopping,
Christin
